Soldiers Tales 8th May 2020

Chapter 3 from Hun's Corner

Fleeing Buckingham Palace

It will be 8th May in about five days time - going by the time of writing, and The Party is publishing another story on soldiers who took part in the war effort. Recently, those running the deceased UK introduced VE-day to replace the old English Maypole Day. However, the Battenbergs have since been confined to house arrest at Windsor castle after fleeing Buckingham palace in 2020.

So far, the Hun has raised a packet of percolator coffee and a Battenberg cake in a walk-to-sponsor initiative to supply The Party after finding some willing sponsors. For those not acquainted with the name, Battenberg is a town in Germany.

Right, so let's start with our next war story!

Invading Europe

The authors of Bletchley Park decided to rewrite the script and launch a counter-offensive into Belgium and on to Holland: they wanted to cross a river and get to Germany. This went against all that Sarge had planned when crossing the Ardennes to reach England. He had already crossed a river with his company on going west and had no intention of allowing those who flee their palace in the face of an invisible adversary to impose a new order by heading east!

The Germans, Sarge explained, have to come west to England by way of a representation to the English Chancellery, not the other way round. And therefore, he continued, there is no need to send an army to invade Germany!

England Is Not Europe

Walking to Arnhem

Captain Ian Jones was walking. He was on his own and hoping to reach his men at a bridge in Arnhem. So he set out from the front line and headed north to catch up with the paratroopers under his command. For two days and two nights he walked, stopping only now and then to open a ration-can of bully beef. Captain Jones had been cut off from his men after bailing out too soon from the aeroplane and landing not far from Dunkirk, from where the German garrison spotted him coming very close.

On reaching Holland he encountered some Dutch men walking in the opposite direction. He enquired of them if they had seen a company of soldiers wearing red berets. They turned and pointed in the direction from which they had been coming, saying, Yes, they are about half an hour behind usTaking this to be a good omen, Captain Jones walked on, and then he saw his own men walking down the road towards him. With them was a German officer. On seeing Captain Jones, the German officer greeted him with a grin on his face.

Captain, he said, your men are all good and well, we met them at Arnhem and they are now on their way to Germany. At this news, Captain Ian Jones turned round and walked back to northern France.
